My sweet Lily is not yet able to identify all her letters. She's about half way there. Hence, we are juicing up letter activities around the house to support her as she grows in this area.
One thing Lily LOVES to do (and undo) is decorate the Christmas tree. This morning, we had some downtime and an abundance of construction paper. So Gabe and I decided to create an alphabet Christmas tree for Lily to use to her heart's content.
We used a circle cutter to cut out 26 4-inch circles (times two!).
Because I'm incapable of cutting a straight line, I cheated and just used stacked 9x11 construction paper to build our tree. It is attached to the wall with painter's tape. I used the kitchen wall because Lily is often in need of an activity to keep her busy while I'm working in the kitchen. Gabe topped our tree with a star he cut out.
After I wrote all the letters on each set of ornaments, Gabe attached velcro strips. I happened to have black ones on hand, which was perfect because they looked like the shape/size of ornament tops. We attached one set to the tree. All placement courtesy of Mr. G. I would probably have been a little more anal about it.
Now Lily can practice matching her letters. Further, we can work on letter recognition and letter sounds using the tree and ornaments.
If I could start again, I would NOT have matched the letter colors (i.e. purple Y is matched to a purple Y) as I think that will make it a little too easy for Lily. But still think it will be a fruitful activity for the little lady!
You are so creative! What a blessing you are to our family!!!
